This page gives designing concepts for kitchen island models for those organizing and planning a new home.
PLANNING AN ISLAND‐CONSIDER YOUR FLOOR PLAN FIRST
Most kitchen configurations can encompass an island but several configurations would become awkward if an island is easy plunked down into the center of them.
The floor plans that work best with kitchen islands are the L‐shaped as well as straight (or one‐wall) kitchen.
'L‐SHAPED´ KITCHEN MODEL WITH ISLAND
In L‐shaped models, the stove could also be on a counter run or the island. Likewise the sink can either be on the island or there can be two sinks‐ one on the ’L‘ plus one on the island.
In the picture following, the island is utilized exclusively for meal preparation with seating. Depending on the contiguous rooms, this island can function well if it is located diagonally on this open side of the kitchen.
STRAIGHT OR ONE‐WALL KITCHEN ISLAND MODEL
In the one‐wall kitchen model shown on the picture, the sink and stove top can be also on the counter run or the island. The image shows a design where the island is used as the meal prep counter plus either contains the dish washing sink with dishwasher.
The stove‐top is on the counter along. And two ’wall‐ovens´ at the end of the counter. The floor plan thereunder shows the opposite of this with the stove on the island.
RULES OF THUMB
Your sketch must permit for an effective work triangle‐the fictive work triangle created among stove top, the sink also fridge.
If you're begining from scratch with either a new house model or an extensive remodel check out our Design Your Own Kitchen tutorial for doing a complete kitchen design.
While planning a kitchen, think the island as any other counter or work surface also determine how it would be a section of (or not a section of) the kitchen work triangle.
A lot of creators recommend a disjunction distance of 3'feet from the island to other counter top. Others recommend1 3.5 or 4 ´feet. My belief is that the distance actually depends on the configuration in‐conjunction with how the kitchen is utilized. In my assumption, even a distance of 5‘feet could be suitable for some models.
The decision for the range among the counter with the island must ponder the number of cooks using the kitchen also the place of appliances. If a refrigerator or an oven door would swing into the area among the island plus counter, make’sure that there is ample area for someone to get among the door with counter.
For a one‐ wall kitchen, adding an island substantially changes it into a galley kitchen configuration. L‐shaped kitchen island models could rectify traffic flow by enabling for two ways of exiting as well as entering the kitchen area.
