Islands are the main status epitome for the Irish house, but are they required?
'The fact of it is that a kitchen island seldom still looks like a stunning display piece for a long time‘
The first time was that spiralizers, NutriBullets plus Nespresso machines were the only status symbols that a kitchen required.
But lately, the main status symbol for the Irish house has gone supersized. Kitchen islands – we're saying a massive, statement showstopper ‐ are now de rigueur, whether you live in a smallish apartment or a much capacious, expansive house.
Status symbol aside, it´s simple to look the appeal. The kitchen has come into existence the hub of the home, obliging the all family also not only the poor sod who is prepping dinner. And for the dining‐kitchen‐living area, the island has its a lot of uses. Time once was that the island doubled as an additional worktop counter.
But now they‘ve been put on multiple duty as a breakfast bar, a storage lifesaver, the place to put the washing up or a homework desk. In several cases, they're easily somewhere to show off the toys.
The kitchen is the one room that could add serious value to a home — experts say it could boost property value by 4‐7 per cent ―. Plus so it stands to motive that a modish kitchen island looks like a wise, if somewhat extravagant, investment.
Whether the kitchen island would eventually become a naff in‐conjunction with cliché design feature, destined to go the way of the conservatory, it’s too soon to tell. But for today, keeping the model clear with neutral appears to be money well spent.
The fact, certainly, is that the kitchen island seldom lives‐up to its promise. Few people really sit at a kitchen island for a begin, especially if there’s a faultlessly fine dining table right beside it. Have you once tried to eat cozy at a kitchen island?
The other great disadvantage of the kitchen island in the center of a huge open living area is that it‘s impossible to cook in peace. Everyone gets to see what´s going on in the kitchen, whether it´s a broken glass, a steak dropped on the floor, or a pot boiling over.
There are those types who savor cooking when face to face with their ’dinner‐party' guests. But if you love to maintain the illusion that you‘re some sort of calm domestic deity, a kitchen island isn‘t for you.
