Kitchen backsplashes can run the gamut from minimalist affairs to elaborate, floor-to-ceiling designs—but depending on your goals for a kitchen backsplash, you may be able to install the design you're looking for and still stay on (or under) budget.
After settling on the scope of the backsplash, you'll just need to decide if you're going to install it yourself (this will require considerable home improvement expertise, time and elbow grease), or have a professional install your cool new kitchen backsplash.
On top of its ease of use and utility, tile is also highly customizable, making it an attractive backsplash option for anyone looking to mirror an existing kitchen design or add visual interest via a backsplash. Various tile materials are available in an almost endless array of styles, colors, shapes and sizes. Tile materials can be purchased at just about any home improvement store, online or in-store. If you can't find what you're looking for at the local home improvement store, many tile specialty retailers are available online or, most likely, in your area. Whichever style of tile you choose for your backsplash, you shouldn't have any trouble finding it close by or via the Internet.
For a very simple, super economical backsplash option, try using a contrasting paint color. For the most impact, choose a color that will really pop against the palette of the rest of the kitchen. To add an extra element of interest, consider a different paint finish (if you used an eggshell paint on the walls of your kitchen, consider a glossy finish for the backsplash). This will also really help your backsplash pop.
Wood is another fairly inexpensive option for your backsplash. This really brings in a warm, rustic feel to your kitchen. This option would work best in a space that doesn’t already have wood or laminate floors, but you could really get creative with the type of wood as well as the placement of the wood (vertical, horizontal or even a zigzag placement).
